Mention code 6602236 | | Intrepid Travel | | | | Day | Destination | Description | | Day 1 | Quito | Magnificently located across an Andean valley, Quito has many sights to explore, such as La Compania de Jesus, considered by many to be the most beautiful building in South America. Covered in seven tonnes of gold leaf, it is certainly one of the most ornate. | | Days 2-3 | Amazon Jungle | A local guide will accompany explorations of the amazing Amazon Jungle, pointing out the many species of trees that local indigenous communities use in their everyday lives to build houses and canoes, and as food and medicines. Spend the night in a simple lodge listening to the sounds of the steamy jungle. | | Days 4-6 | Banos | With waterfalls, lush green hills and the peaks of the Tungurahua Volcano soaring high above, Banos is gorgeous, but its real claim to fame is as an adventure playground. There are many optional activities to try here, from mountain biking to rafting and everything in between. | | Days 7-8 | Hacienda stay | Visit the mineral water springs and clear swimming pool of Machachi before continuing by jeep to a typical Andean hacienda. Sip canelazo (cinnamon tea) with our local hosts and enjoy a delicious lunch. | | Days 9-10 | Quito | Take a walk through the historic heart of Quito, centred around the Plaza de la Independencia and Plaza Grande. Perhaps visit the old astronomical observatory in Parque Alameda or head to La Mitad del Mundo to straddle the equator and see which way the water drains. There are more than 30 churches to explore in the Old Town, not to mention the fascinating museums, but if you want to get out and practice your Spanish then be sure to drop by a pena. These are great places for meeting locals and enjoying some local cuisine. |
