Then travel north to the Namibian border via the Western Cape. Continue along the strikingly beautiful Orange River before arriving at Fish River Canyon, a photogenic gorge stretching an immense 160 km. Climb the world's highest dunes in the Namib-Naukluft National Park for an amazing view of red seas of sand and enjoy optional activities such as dune-bashing on a quad bike or sand-boarding in the coastal town of Swakopmund. | | Days 8-15 | Namibia/Botswana | Watch seals laze about in the sun on a visit to the Cape Cross seal colony, home to thousands of these furry creatures. Pass through scenic Damaraland before entering Etosha National Park. Game drives here can spot the Big Five and more. At dusk, set up camp near the floodlit waterholes to see nocturnal predators. Cross into Botswana via Namibia's German-inspired capital, Windhoek, and head to the wonderful wetlands of the Okavango Delta. Explore the islands and waterways on foot and in a traditional mokoro (dugout canoe), keeping an eye out for crocodiles and hippos. | | Days 16-21 | Botswana/Zambia | Take land and river safaris through Chobe National Park, a reserve renowned for its huge number of elephants. Over the border in Zambia, travel to Livingstone, gateway to the enormous Victoria Falls. There's plenty of free time to enjoy the sight of the mighty falls or to get your adrenaline pumping: white-water rafting, abseiling and bungee jumping are just some of the optional activities available here. | | Days 22-34 | Malawi/Tanzania/Zanzibar | Enjoy a few days on the peaceful banks of Lake Malawi, perhaps swimming in the clear waters or making friends with the welcoming locals. Keep an eye out for giraffes on a drive through the small Mikumi National Park, stop by at the port city of Dar es Salaam and take the ferry to the exotic Spice Island of Zanzibar to relax on palm-fringed sandy beaches and explore the treasures of Stone Town. | | Days 35-41 | Tanzania/Kenya/Nairobi | Return to the mainland and head to Arusha for a Masai village visit before crossing by 4WD to the well-known Serengeti National Park, ancient Olduvai Gorge and Ngorongoro Crater, where wildlife viewing is second to none. The adventure comes to an end in chaotic Nairobi. |
